The mission of the Great Lakes Green Chemistry Network is to create partnerships between academia, industry, government, labor, and non-governmental organizations to promote green chemistry practice in the bi-national Great Lakes region. The work of the Great Lakes Green Chemistry Network is supported by a grant from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Great Lakes National Program Office with technical and administrative support from Great Lakes United, an international organization dedicated to preserving and restoring the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River ecosystem.
Background
In 2006, members of the Great Lakes Green Chemistry Working group organized a workshop at the State of the Lakes Conference in Milwaukee, WI. The workshop featured keynote presentations by Dr. John Warner founder of the Warner-Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry and Berkeley Cue, recently retired from the Pfizer Pharmaceutical Corporation. One of the outcomes of the meeting was a consensus that more needed to be done to advance the understanding of green chemistry science and technology. The Great Lakes Green Chemistry Network was created to answer this need, providing news, presentations, materials, links, and forums to educate the public, private industry, government agencies, and non profit organizations on the potential and promise of green chemistry as a key strategy to eliminate and reduce toxic and hazardous chemicals in the Great Lakes region and beyond.
